Find out more about Thursday’s Top 4 here! It’s basically a meme I started mainly for myself, but anyone can participate! Visit this page for the upcoming topics 🙂
This week’s topic is books with bad endings/endings you want to rewrite. There are minimal spoilers below (very minimal, nothing super related to the plot).
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
This is one of my favourite books and least favourite endings. It is THE WORST ending ever and I hate it. I made this topic specifically so I could rant about the ending of this book. I won’t spoil it, but if you have read it, please let me know your thoughts below! Because I think it is literally the worst ending to a book I have ever read.
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
I really enjoy this book, but the ending has a creepy rapey scene and it really ruins the ending. I would rewrite it to take out that scene, because the ending is great otherwise.
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
So I like the ending for the most part. I just don’t like how it’s dragged on unnecessarily. I really just want to edit it and take out some of Theo being depressed in his hotel room.
The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins
I liked how the series ended overall and I wouldn’t change the official output. BUT there are TWO character deaths that I hate and I wish they weren’t there. One of them I can live with and I think it actually explains Katniss’ feelings fairly well, but the other one was completely unnecessary and I just remember being shocked that it happened. It wasn’t even a good death. THEY DESERVED BETTER.
Are there any endings you’d like to rewrite? Or that you hate? Let me know below!
Thanks for reading!
xx
Hunger Games made my list, too. I think even those that lived through it all deserved better…

Hunger Games end was not good… those deaths felt sensationalized just to she she could kill people the readers loved… I agree if you’re going to kill them fine… but do it right! ♥️ Great topic Ally!

Exactly! Killing characters can be effective sometimes, but those ones weren’t. Thanks for reading! 🙂

I totally, totally agree about Goldfinch- I felt like the whole thing just dragged, so even though the ending was decent, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I could have. I do get what you mean about Hunger Games- I liked the ending to be honest, but it was so devastating!

Exactly! The ending wasn’t as satisfying as I wanted and it dragged on too much.
It was so sad!!

This is an interesting thought! I don’t blame you for wanting to re-write the ending of The Hunger Games trilogy. I don’t object to the resolution, but I agree that there are a few pointless deaths that I’d un-write, given the option.

I wasn’t impressed with the ending of The Goldfinch either. It was a lot of work for a mediocre ending.

I think it was just a realistic ending.
