Summer reading wrap-up

I managed to read a lot of wonderful books this summer and I’m so happy! I’ve been in a reading slump for the past couple years (yes, years. university does that to you), where all I wanted to read were the same YA romances over and over again. But this summer I found some great books and I’m so happy I’m out of the slump!

New reads

Golden Son by Pierce Brown – 4.5/5 stars

Morning Star by Pierce Brown – 5/5 stars

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus – 3/5 stars

Caraval by Stephanie Garber – 2.5/5 stars

A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki – unrated

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – 5/5 stars

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas – 5/5 stars

We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – 5/5 stars

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab – 4/5 stars

Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi – 3/5 stars

Queen of Katwe by Tim Crothers – 3.5/5 stars

Re-reads

Exit the Actress by Priya Parmar – 4.25/5 stars

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins – 4.75/5 stars

Reviews for all of these are coming over the next few weeks!

My favourites would have to be Morning Star, the Night Circus, and the Hate U Give. One sci-fi dystopian, one magical realism, and one contemporary about race relations in the US. Three very, very different books, but all very good in their own respects.

My least favourite was probably Caraval. Though it was interesting, I didn’t like any of the characters and I felt like it was really random and the eventual answers didn’t make much sense. However, I’ll probably still read the second one.

Have you read any of these? Which were your favourites??

Thanks for reading! Ally xx

  1. THUG is SUCH a phenomenal book. It not only talks about really important topics, but it’s thoroughly entertaining, too. Quite a few of these others are on my TBR – I just need to find the time to actually read them, haha!
