Hello, friends!
A few years ago now, I did a TBR round-up where I looked at all my old TBRs and whether I had read the books on those lists on not. I thought it would be fun to do an updated one as it’s been FOUR YEARS!! since the last one (how has it been that long omg).
A couple of caveats with this post: I’m only going to be looking at posts that were specifically TBR posts or “books I need to read”-like posts. I have too many posts that simply look at books on my Goodreads TBR, and that would be overwhelming. I’m also excluding TBRs I made for specific read-a-thons. I also went back and forth with myself on whether to include books multiple times, and I ultimately decided to keep them so that I knew how often I mentioned books. I’ve decided that if a book is mentioned at least four times in this post and is still unread, it’s getting removed from my TBR.
So without further ado, here are all the TBRs I’ve published since my last round-up and how many books I’ve read from them!

Books that were unread at my last TBR round-up (January, 2019)
- The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf: still unread
- The Queen of Katwe by Tim Crothers: still unread (and removed from the TBR)
- The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill: still unread
- Ready Player One by Ernest Cline: read!
- Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo: read!
- 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami: read
3/6 read. Because this post was literally four years ago, I’m removing the ones that are still unread.

New releases I still need to read (April, 2019)
- Iron Gold by Pierce Brown: unread
- Sadie by Courtney Summers: read!
- The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton: read!
- The Water Cure by Sophie Mackintosh: read!
3/4 read! 75% is probably the best we’ll get on this whole post tbh.

Physical TBR update (April, 2019)
- Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi: read
- X by Ilyasah Shabazz: unread
- The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill: unread
- A Vindication of the Rights of Women by Mary Wollstonecraft: unread
- Night by Elie Wiesel: read
- Ready Player One by Ernest Cline: read
- Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave: unread, I have no memory of this book
- Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor: unread
- The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton: unread
- The Tattooist of Aushwitz by Meather Morris: unread
- Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo: read!
- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith: read!
- The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne: read!
- Rebecca by Daphne de Maurier: unread
- Dopesick by Beth Macy: unread
- Hum if You Don’t Know the Words by Bianca Marais: unread but she did comment on one of my bookstagram posts
- Swing Time by Zadie Smith: unread
- Becoming by Michelle Obama: unread
6/18 read. Some of these are so bizarre, I have no idea why they were on my TBR.

Sequels I need to get to (April, 2019, side note: why was I talking about my TBR so much this month)
- Iron Gold by Pierce Brown: unread
- Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman: unread
- Prodigy and Champion by Marie Lu: unread
- A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons by George RR Martin: unread
- A Wild Sheep Chase and Dance Dance Dance by Haruki Murakami: unread
0/8 read. To be fair, most of these were never actually on my Goodreads TBR, and this post was my reminder to myself to read them (it didn’t work)

Updated Top TBR (May, 2019)
- Night by Elie Wiesel: read!
- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith: read
- Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier: unread
- 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami: read!
- Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi: read!
- The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill: unread
- Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor: unread
- Columbine by Dave Cullen: read!

- The Book of Essie by Meghan MacLean Weir: read!
- Did You See Melody? by Sophie Hannah: unread
- Keep Sweet by Michele Domínguez Green: unread
- The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed: read!
- Radio Silence by Alice Oseman: read!
10/20 read is honestly pretty good for me.

Books on my summer TBR (June, 2019)
- Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: unread
- 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami: read!
- The Awakening by Kate Chopin: unread
- Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor: unread
- The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker: read!
- The Raven Cycle, books 2-4 by Maggie Stiefvater: read!
Okay, 3/6 is not bad! What I’ve learned so far is that I do not read sequels unless I read them right away.

Books I need to read before the end of 2019 (November, 2019, lol)
- Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: unread
- Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor: unread
- The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker: read but definitely not in 2019
1/3 read is pretty bad, especially considering I didn’t read Silence of the Girls until 2020 I think.

Backlist books to read in 2020 (January, 2020)
- Sabrina by Nick Drnaso: read!
- The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill: unread
- Self Portrait with Boy by Rachel Lyon: unread
- Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice: read!
- The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline: read!
- Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel: read!
- The Midnight Dance by Nikki Katz: read unfortunately
- Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier: unread
- Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? by Lorrie Moore: unread
- Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot: read!
6/10 is better than I expected, and honestly par for the course for yearly TBRs.

August reading plans (not a TBR) (it was a TBR, August, 2020)
- Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo: read!
- Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor: unread
- Check, Please! Volume 2: Sticks and Scones by Ngozi Ukazu: read!
- Unravel the Dusk by Elizabeth Lim: read!
- Felix Ever After by Kacen Callendar: unread
- The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta: unread
- Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid: unread
- The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill: unread
- Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? by Lorie Moore: unread
- Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier: unread
- Self-Portrait with Boy by Rachel Lyon: unread
3/11 is rough again. This is why I don’t make TBRs.

- The Gallery of Unfinished Girls by Lauren Karcz: read!
- Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? by Lorrie Moore: unread

11/26 read, with a couple removed from my TBR altogether prior to this post. Those were removed because I read the first few pages and decided I wasn’t interested, but didn’t read enough to consider them DNFs.

July and August TBR (???) (July, 2021)
- Brood by Jackie Polzin: read!
- Influence by Sara Sheppard: unread, removed from TBR
- Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers: read!
- Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel: read!
- Wink, Poppy, Midnight by April Genevive Tucholke: read!
- Wild Women and the Blues by Denny S. Bryce: unread, removed from TBR
- Red Comet by Heather Clark: DNF
- Replay by Ken Grimwood: read!
5/8 read is so good!! Both Influence and Wild Women were removed from my TBR after I read the first few pages. I was so excited for Wild Women but it was unfortunately some of the worst writing I’ve read in a while. Red Comet was just taking me too long to get through.

Books I want to read before the end of the year (October, 2021)
- The Water Cure by Sophie Mackintosh: read!
- The Midnight Library by Matt Haig: read!
- The Project by Courtney Summers: read (but not in 2021)
- A Little Life by Hanya Yangihara: unread
- Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeline Thein: unread
- Last Call by Elon Green: read!
- Fault Lines by Emily Itami: read!
- A Ghost in the Throat by Doireann Ni Ghriofa: DNF
- Check, Please! Sticks and Scones by Ngozi Ukazu: read!
- Red Comet by Heather Clark: DNF
- The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa: read (but not in 2021)
- Birthday by Meredeith Russo: read!
8/12 read is pretty good! The only ones unread are the two I keep saying I’m going to read.

2022 reading plans (January, 2022)
- Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters: unread
- Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi: unread
- Unravel the Dusk by Elizabeth Lim: unread
- Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor: unread
- Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: read!
- City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert: read!
- Self-Portrait with Boy by Rachel Lyon: unread
- Tin Man by Sarah Winman: unread
- A Little Life by Hanya Yangihara: unread (idk how many yearly TBRs this has been on at this point but clearly I need to stop)
- The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa: read!
- Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li: read!
- Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel: unread
4/12 read on the other hand is not great. But my 2022 reading was overall not great so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So overall I have read 51 of 97 unique books, which is 53%. I could definitely do better at following TBRs, especially as 26 of my unread books are ones I own. But I also did better than I was expecting — my reading has definitely lessened the past two years, and my following of TBRs has worsened so this was a pleasant surprise honestly.
But anyway! How are you at following TBRs? Have you ever done a TBR round-up? What do you think your results would be? Let me know!
Thanks for reading! xx

honestly, 53% sounds pretty good to me 😂 i need to look back on mine at some point, i’m sure it’s a mess

It was better than I expected for sure lol. Maybe yours won’t be as bad as you think!

I used to do seasonal TBRs that I followed well enough to do a wrap-up of them before the next season. At that point I had pretty good luck with reading the books I put on my TBRs! And then the pandemic happened and I became a complete mood reader, and I stopped bothering to do TBR wrap-ups. However, now that I’m somewhere in-between it might be worth doing reviews again to see how well I picked books for my TBRs.
Your 53% read seems great to me, honestly. If I end up with a 53% read of my TBRs from the past 4 years, I’d be surprised.

SAME, for a while, I was so good at following TBRs I set — I even found an old blog post recently where I talk about how good I am at following TBRs. But I’ve definitely become more of a mood reader in recent years. But I do like looking back and seeing what I haven’t read, what I still want to read, what I don’t any more.
Thank you! 53% was better than I was expecting honestly so I’ll take it!

I’ve decided that I’m going to start tracking my seasonal TBR success again, see if maybe I’m at a place where I can follow the lists I set. Life is not the same as it used to be, but it has stabilized again, so maybe my reading habits have too? I’m curious at any rate.
I’m a bit nervous to look back at the past few years, though. I don’t think I’d have a 53% success rate for the past couple of years…

53% sounds like great progress to me. This is a really cool idea. I might have to save it and do it myself at some point. I’m more of a TBR reader myself so I feel like I will have more read than unread but it would be neat to know for sure.

Thank you!! I was happy with 53% for sure! And of course! I borrowed the idea from someone else, and it’d be super interesting to see how yours differs!
