Hello, friends! Today is one of my favourite posts, my 2022 reading wrap-up! I love statistics and numbers and categorizing things, and this post is just an excuse to do that.

According to Goodreads, I read 35 books and 10,502 pages, which I think is pretty good! My goal was 35, so I’m glad I hit that. So let’s take a look at the books I read!

  • Four were audiobooks

My goal was to read 15 physical books from my TBR, and I was so close with 13!!! This is also significantly fewer audiobooks than usual, probably because I started listening to albums on my commute rather than audiobooks.

Age

  • Adult: 28
  • YA: seven

This ratio is about right for me. I’ve definitely been moving away from YA over the years, and throughout this year too.

This is actually super interesting! I felt like I rated a bunch of books five stars, but I only have five. I think a lot of my 4.5 stars got rounded up on Goodreads. My Goodreads average for this year was 4.1, which makes sense based on these numbers. Overall, I’d say this was a fairly strong year!

This ratio also makes sense! I went through phases of only reading physical books and only reading library books. I also did a pretty good job not buying books this year honestly!

TBR status

  • 29 were on my TBR prior to 2022
  • Six were added to my TBR in 2022

This is really good! I’m actually pretty impressed lol. I guess I do a pretty good job of reading my TBR, but not my physical TBR.

Publication

  • Seven were published in 2022
  • 12 were published in 2021
  • Eight were published in 2020
  • Six were published in 2019, one of which was only translated to English in 2021
  • One was published in 2017
  • One was published in 1994, but was only translated to English in 2019

This is super interesting! There are a lot more 2021 releases than I expected, and significantly fewer older books. I tend to read books either 10 years after they’re published or two years after they’re published, so this breakdown is super interesting.

Genres

  • Eight were contemporary, three of which were a short story collection
  • Seven were nonfiction, two of which were a memoir
  • Seven were romance, one of which was YA
  • Six were thrillers/horror/mystery, three of which were YA
  • Four were sci-fi
  • Two were historical fiction
  • One was fantasy

Of these:

  • Two were graphic novels
  • Three were short story collections
  • One was part of a series

I get this genre breakdown from what Goodreads users classify the books as. This genre distribution is also super interesting! I read more thrillers/horror/mystery than I think I do, and less SFF than I think I do. I also only read one book that was part of a series this year. I always say I’m not really a series reader, and I think this is proof of that.

Others

  • 11 were by Canadian authors (31%)
  • Two were translated

This is, percentage-wise, more Canadian authors than I read last year! I’m also fairly happy with the percentages of non-white and queer authors, but I’m not going to write those because it feels weird (I calculate it for myself so I know any weak spots I have, but I don’t like publishing it because it feels tokenizing).
