Auto-buy authors

Hello, friends and book lovers! Happy Friday, I hope all is well!

Before we really get into the post, I just wanted to say sorry for being a little absent lately. Work has been super busy, so between work, working on passing the bar, having an apartment and having to take care of that and myself and my boyfriend, reading, starting therapy, and trying to exercise regularly, it has been busy. Unfortunately, blogging is the thing I let slack when I get busy, so there have been fewer posts than usual.

BUT I am determined to continue blogging semi-regularly. My goal for a while has been twice a week, and I want to maintain that as much as possible. But I just wanted to let everyone know that I’m busy, so it’ll be less than usual.

ANYWAY onto today’s post. I’m going to talk about some auto-buy authors for me. These are authors who, regardless of the plot of the book, I will buy and read their books. They’ve written some of my all-time favourite books, and could write a phone book and I’d still read it.

Celeste Ng

Celeste Ng has written two novels, Little Fires Everywhere and Everything I Never Told You, and I gave both of them five stars. Everything I Never Told You is my favourite book ever and I think about it constantly. I don’t know when Ng is going to release her next book, but I will be the first to preorder it.

Emily St. John Mandel

Similarly to Ng, I have read two of Mandel’s books, Station Eleven and Last Night in Montreal and gave both of them five stars. There’s just something about her writing that I love. It’s so clean and simple yet effective, and I find her characters and stories really compelling. I’m very excited to work my way through her backlist and am really looking forward to her new releases.

Sally Rooney

I’ve only read one of Rooney’s books, Conversations With Friends, and it was one of those books that I wasn’t thrilled by as I was reading it, but then couldn’t stop thinking about when I finished it. I ended up rooting for the characters way more than I was expecting to. I’ve heard only good things about her other books, and I definitely plan on reading them ASAP. BWWAY is on my Christmas list.

Vivek Shraya

The Subtweet is one of my favourite books of this year and one of my most recommended books. I’ve been wanting to read Shraya’s nonfiction for a while, and will definitely be reading any fiction she writes in the future. I just loved her writing and characters and the drama in The Subtweet, so I am very interested in seeing what she writes next.

Alicia Elliott

Elliott has only written on book thusfar, her essay collection A Mind Spread out on the Ground, but it is the best essay collection I’ve read. Her writing is just so clear and concise, and she is able to elicit such empathy from the reader. I follow her on twitter, and she’s working on a novel, so I am really excited to see what happens next.

Emily Henry

Emily Henry is a newer addition to my autobuy list, but she definitely deserves it. I read Beach Read earlier this year and loved it. It was funny and heartfelt and sweet without feeling cheesy, and I had such a great time reading it. I’m super excited about her newest release, People we Meet on Vacation, and to see what she does next.

So there are my autobuy authors! These authors have all written books I’ve given five stars or have loved, and I’m really excited to read more by them!

I also wanted to mention some runner-ups, or authors where I plan to read almost everything they write/have written, or at least am excited to see any new books they publish: Lisa See, Richard Wagamese, Noelle Stevenson, Courtney Summers, Waubgeshig Rice, Erin Morgenstern, Wayetu Moore, Casey McQuiston, Seanan McGuire, Carmen Maria Machado, and Taylor Jenkins Reed.

Who are your autobuy authors? Have you read any of these authors? Let me know!

  1. I’ve only read Emily Henry’s books so far, but some of the other authors are on my TBR. Caitlin Doughty is definitely an auto-buy author for me but Katie Zhao is definitely a new favourite too, I’ll forever buy anything she writes because so far I’ve loved all her books!

  2. I have fewer auto-buy authors than I used to. I do have some auto-buy series, though: notably Murderbot and the Wayward Children books. I do have some *usually* buy authors too, including Seanan McGuire, Kelley Armstrong, Stephanie Burgis, and T. Kingfisher.
