Happy Friday, y’all! Hope your week has been going well. Today I’m doing the Midyear Freakout Book Tag to talk about some of the books I’ve read so far this year! Credits go to Earl Grey Books and ReadLikeWildFire for creating the original tag (although the original video has since been deleted).
So, let’s get into the books!

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ YET IN 2021
My two favourites of the year have been The Subtweet by Vivek Shraya and In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. They’re both so interesting and well-written, and I highly recommend both.
BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2021
I haven’t read a sequel yet this year, sorry! I do have a couple coming up though.
NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO
Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers. My boyfriend got me a copy for my birthday, and I’m so excited to read it but I just keep not picking it up. I will absolutely be reading it ASAP though (most likely).
MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR
Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney for SURE. There aren’t a ton of books coming out in the second half of the year that I know about and are excited for, but this is one of them. I loved Sally Rooney and am really excited to read this.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
I’m going to have to go with Stay Gold by Tobly McSmith for this one. I thought it was fairly entertaining and fun to read for the most part, but I think it’s also really hard to read and has a potentially harmful ending/message.

BIGGEST SURPRISE
I think this one has to go to The Wrath and the Dawn by Renée Adhieh. I typically don’t love backlist YA fantasy, but I had high expectations for this one and it luckily lived up to those expectations. It was really fun and entertaining, and I’m really looking forward to reading the sequel.
FAVOURITE NEW AUTHOR
I’ve read a ton of new authors this year so probably Vivek Shraya, Richard Wagamese, and Frances Cha. They’re all authors where I will be looking out for their new books (and reading his backlist, in the case of Wagamese).
NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH
I don’t have fictional crushes, so next!
NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER
I honestly can’t think of any right now. I don’t really get attached to book characters, so I don’t have list of favourite characters.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY
Daring Greatly by Brené Brown made me cry because it reminded me of my mom and it me think about my flaws lmao.
BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY
Beach Read by Emily Henry was really fun and cute and sweet and definitely what I needed to read. I’d highly recommend it.
FAVOURITE BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATION
I don’t think I’ve read or watched any adaptations this year, honestly. I watched the first episode of Little Fires Everywhere and definitely plan to continue, though.
MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR
I actually bought a couple books! Maybe Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson because the colours are so gorgeous.
WHAT BOOKS DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR
The books on my 2021 TBR that I still need to read are:
- Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers
- The Project by Courtney Summers
- She’s Too Pretty to Burn by Wendy Heard
- Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor
- A Little Life by Hanya Yangihara
- Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeline Thein
- Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? by Lorie Moore
I also have a bunch on hold at the library that I plan to read, so hopefully I also get to those!

So there’s a brief look at my reading so far this year! What have you been reading? What’s been your biggest surprise? Biggest disappointment? Let me know!

I posted my mid-year recap today too! Though I have a LOT more books published in the second half of 202 that I’m looking forward to.
Happy reading!

Ahhh I’m so excited to read it! So glad to hear you loved it!
Right!! I didn’t hate Stay Gold while I was reading it, but the more I reflected on it, the more I disliked it. Glad I’m not alone in that feeling, though
