Top 5 Tuesday: authors I need to read

Happy Tuesday, gals and pals! Today is another Top 5 Tuesday. Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme created by the lovely Shanah at the Bionic Bookworm. You can visit here for the upcoming topics!

Today the topic is authors I NEED to read! Which is a great topic, because there are so many authors I really need to read ASAP.

Mitch Albom: this one is kind of shameful. We own so many Mitch Albom books and my parents love them, and I have yet to read any of them. Hopefully (definitely) soon!

Maya Angelou: I’ve also never read anything by Maya Angelou. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about her writing, so this needs to happen ASAP as possible.

Roxanne Gay: I love everything Roxanne Gay says, but I have never read anything by her except her tweets. I have about four of her books on my TBR, too, so this needs to happen soon.

Alice Hoffman: my mom is a big fan of Alice Hoffman, and her books sound right up my alley. She writes magical realism, I’m pretty sure, which, when done well, is my jam.

N. K. Jemisin: oh look, another author I just follow on Twitter. Mara Wilson AKA Matilda highly recommends Jemisin’s books, which is enough endorsement for me honestly. I’ve also heard that she writes really interesting fantasy worlds, which I need in my life soon.

Toni Morrison: another shameful one. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Morrison, so I really need to read her soon.

So those are some authors I really need to read soon! What about you? Which authors do you need to read ASAP? Have you read any of these? Which of their books should I read first? Let me know!

Thanks for reading! xx

  1. I read Jemisin’s How Long ‘Til Black Future Month? and really enjoyed it. It’s a collection of short stories, and so I found it really easy to get into as an introduction to a new author.

I’ve only read one book by Maya Angelou: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I didn’t enjoy it much, but that’s because it was assigned as required reading for school, and the teacher decided to have us read the whole thing before discussing any of it. I was a sheltered kid, and so Angelou’s descriptions were very shocking to me. By the time we discussed the book in class and I started to understand it, I had already developed a strong dislike for it because of how it didn’t pull any punches. I think if I’d been prepared better for the book, I could have enjoyed it.

    1. Oooh good to know! I’ve had that book on my TBR since before it came out, so glad to hear it was good!

That’s fair! I feel like, especially as a kid/teenager, it’s important to warned about certain topics so you know what your expectations should be.

      1. I obviously enjoyed some of Jemisin’s short stories more than others, but they were all of incredibly high quality. I hope you enjoy!

If I’d picked up the book for myself, I wouldn’t have minded so much about not knowing what I was getting into. But since it was assigned by a teacher, I kinda thought we should have had better guidance during the reading process.
