Books everyone but me has read

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Today I am talking about some books that it seems everyone has read that I have yet to.

Throughout school, I always had English teachers who were ~hip~ and ~cool~ and wanted to ensure the youth actually read the assigned books. This meant we read a lot of fun popular books, which was great, but it also meant that there are a lot of books that are books people always say “everyone has to read this in high school!” and I never had to read it.

So I thought today it could be fun to talk about some of those books! These are also all books that I plan on reading at some point.

The Giver by Lois Lowry: I know, I know. Literally everyone and their parents have read this book. But I never had to for school, so I still haven’t. It’s super short though, so I’m hoping to read it soon.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen: the real shame here: I haven’t even seen any of the adaptations. Like, I literally know next to nothing about this book except that Elizabeth and Darcy get together in the end, which is all that really matters I think.

To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee: once again, I never had to read this for school, so I never read it. But I know a ton of people who really loved it, despite needing to read it for school. So I definitely want to at some point.

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank: I’M SORRY, OKAY. I haven’t read this. I know literally everyone else has. It will happen some day, I promise.

The Lord of the Flies by William Golding: I know the general premise of this book, but I haven’t actually read it. I definitely want to at some point, though.

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier: but it will happen soon!!!! I really want to get to this ASAP, and I got a physical copy for Christmas last year, so hopefully soon!

1984 by George Orwell: okay this book on my Goodreads is marked as “read”, but it’s actually a DNF. I tried reading it, for fun, when I was like 15 or something. I hated it. So I never actually read this book.

So, those are some books that I haven’t read that everyone else has. Have you read these? Are there any books everyone has read that you haven’t? Which of these should I read first? Let me know!

  1. I’ve read 4 of your list. Definitely drop everything and read ‘To kill a mockingbird”, then enjoy it all over again when you see Gregory Peck embody Atticus in the film. Anne Frank should be next, I’d argue.

  2. I’ve only read Lord of the Flies (in school) and The Diary of a Young girl from this list! There are a lot of classics I haven’t read that I would be embarrassed to admit as an English major lol

  3. I have read all of these except Rebecca, and that’s on my TBR list. However, the only one I read FOR SCHOOL was Lord of the Flies. I did a similar look at “books everyone has read that I haven’t” a couple years back, and started making a point to pick up the ones that interested me.

    For the record, my thoughts:
The Giver: really good, thought-provoking book. Worth reading.
Pride & Prejudice: read it if you like the style, otherwise… *shrug*
To Kill a Mockingbird: very unpopular opinion, but… meh. Not worth the hype in my opinion.
Diary of a Young Girl: very worth reading. But it wasn’t what I expected going into it.
Lord of the Flies: I will never read this again. It might have been my least favorite school reading ever.
1984: I read this last August, and it felt way too close to possible. Worth reading for the warning. I felt it was an important book and enjoyed reading it, but I didn’t *like* it, if that makes sense.

  4. I’ve read all of these except Pride and Prejudice and The Diary of a Young Girl, and enjoyed them all! P&P is what I always answer for the ‘books everyone has read but me’ question.

  5. I would definitely say read To Kill a Mockingbird first. By far one of the best books I ever had to read in school followed by Diary of a Young Girl, The Giver, 1984. Never read Lord of the Flies and Rebecca though both are on my TBR.

  6. Stick to your guns and read what pleases you the classics can stay on the shelf. There is a lot of snobbery in literature and music and a curious belief that unless we read the appointed classics and listen to Beethoven we are uncultured.

  7. Gotta admit I recommend all of these! 😉 I can understand not finishing 1984 though- it’s really depressing and hard to get through because of that. The one I recommend the most is to kill a mockingbird. Also Rebecca would be really good for this time of year! And it’s great for sheer entertainment value!

    1. Oooh good to know! I think 1984 is one of those books I’m just going to have to force myself to read. But I’m looking forward to the rest of them! I wish I had my copy of Rebecca because it seems like the perfect fall book.

  8. Honestly, I am jealous that you got to read fun books in school. I mean, I enjoyed classics but I think life would have been different had we also read newer releases that touched on important themes as well. I’ve read all of these but The Giver and Rebecca. 1984 is one of my faves but I can’t read it or Handmaid’s Tale these days because it feels too close to reality.

  9. I’m surprised that I actually read quite some of these, though I also feel as if I should have read the ones I haven’t yet. Like Pride and Prejudice. I should really read that!

There’s also something beautiful about the fact you haven’t read it yet. There will be that moment that you do and perhaps you will be blown away by an amazing story.

    1. That’s such a great way of looking at it! 💕 I know a lot of these are universally enjoyed, so hopefully they work for me as well!

And I hope you enjoy Pride and Prejudice as well! We can be the last two people to read it lol
