Happy Tuesday, gals and pals! Last week’s Top Ten Tuesday was favourite tropes, which I didn’t do because I didn’t think I had enough to say about tropes. Well, reading everyone’s posts, I realised that I do, in fact, unsurprisingly, have a lot to say about tropes. So here we are today, with me talking about some tropes that I want to see more of!
Training scenes: listen, I love any and all training scenes. Honestly, idk why I enjoy them so much, but I do.
Boarding schools: I’ve always thought boarding schools were really cool, and if a book has a boarding school, there is a 99% chance that I will read it. Idk what it is about boarding schools, but they’re the best setting.
- Recommendation: Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
- On my TBR: Wilder Girls by Rory Power
Secret royals: I love!!! secret royals!!! There’s just something about it that’s so much fun. Another similar trope that I love is the “secretly wealthy love interest” trope. Where one character is not wealthy and the love interest is vvv wealthy but hides it from the first one. I just love it so much!
Forbidden romance: listen, forbidden romance is the best trope. When two people clearly love each other but they can’t be together so they’re secretly together and hide it from everyone and have to pretend that they’re not together? Unparalleled.
- Recommendation: Vixen by Jillian Larkin
Heists: I’m obsessed with heists in real life, too. They’re just so fun. I love reading about the plan to steal the secret thing or break into the place or whatever.
- Recommendation: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Illicit magic: bonus points if it’s used by (a) someone close to the person who banned it or (b) by the love interest/best friend of the person or someone close to the person who banned it. Like in Merlin, you know?
- On my TBR: Descendant of the Crane by Joan He
Found families: found family is the best!!!! Like, when a group of seemingly random people who don’t have other friends or family find each other and love each other until the very end? Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping.
- Recommendation: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
So those are some of my favourite tropes that I’d like to see more of! Do you have any recommendations for these? What are your favourite books with these tropes? Do you love any of these? Let me know!
Ally xx
Forbidden Love!! I can’t believe I forgot to mention that on my tropes list, it would’ve been #1 for sure. 😀 Agreed on boarding schools too, open to any book that has a boarding school setting.

Secret royals sounds so good! I don’t think I’ve read many with that trope, other than Throne of Glass. I should look for some!

I haven’t read many either! I feel like it’s more popular in movies rather than books

Boarding schools and training scenes go really well together! Add in a bit of magic, and you’ve sold me. 😉

SAME! Magic, boarding schools, and training sequences in the same book would be my ideal

I only worry that I’d spend too much time trying to find the perfect training montage music to listen to while reading the book. 😉

Boarding schools, illicit magic and found families are some of my favourites too. One of my old writing WIPs coincidently had illicit magic and was based in a boarding school but I constantly struggled trying not to make it sound like Harry Potter.

Oooh so glad you agree! I would have 100% read that book 😉 but I can definitely see how it’d be hard to make a magical boarding school not Harry Potter-esque

I hope not because I read back over it earlier and it was as cringey as hell! However, I’m trying to rework it so we’ll see what happens.

Omg I used to be OBSESSED with boarding school stories when I was younger! Back when I used to write my own fiction, they’d almost always be set at boarding schools as well 😂 AND THE SECRET WEALTHY LOVE INTEREST!! YESSSSSS 😍
