Thursday discussion: books or series that would make good TV shows

Happy Thursday, everyone! Welcome to this week’s Thursday Discussion. Essentially, this is a biweekly meme where you write a post based on the prompt for that week. The post can be as long or as short as you want, and you can talk about as much or as little as you want. Visit this page for the upcoming topics! It happens every other week, and I generally post the topics a month(ish) in advance.

This week the topic is books or series that would make good TV shows. Honestly, I love the Netflix limited series format of TV shows, and think works so well to adapt books. There are some books that I want to see on-screen, but would be too long for movies but would also not work well as a full-length TV show.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid: this would be such a great limited series. There would be one episode per husband, with maybe a final episode at the end to tie everything up for eight episodes overall. Also it would be great if a TV show would actually use the word “bisexual” on-screen for once.

I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak: this would also be a good limited series. There could be one season per card with two episodes per person? Idk I just feel like this book would work really well as a TV show.

The Seven (& 1/2) Deaths  of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton: another one that would be a great miniseries! Again, there could be one or two episodes per person/death, and maybe an episode about Annabelle or from her perspective. I also think it would work great with a Black Mirror vibe.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo: would you look at that, another limited series. I think this book would be fantastic in TV show-format, but I think it would need to end. Maybe two seasons per book (I haven’t read Crooked Kingdom yet so idk how much it would need). I think we’re getting a Grishaverse Netflix show, so that’s super exciting! Let’s hope they do it well!

The Raven Boys by Maggie Steifvater: as I’m listening to the audiobooks for these books, I can perfectly picture so many of the scenes as on-screen format. I think it would be so perfect as a TV show, with one season per book. Someone please do it.

So those are some books I would love to see as TV shows. Do you agree with any of these? Are there any you’d want as a TV show? Let me know!

  1. I would love to see Murderbot onscreen! I’m not positive how well it would translate from the page to the screen, but with the right cast and directing team I think it could really work.

  2. Great list! I totally agree about Evelyn Hardcastle. I had mixed feelings about the book, but would probably be really into a limited series. It’s twisty enough that the Westworld crowd would get really into it.

  3. Boys series is in the works and Maggie Stiefvater herself is involved in at least writing the script for the first episode. I am a mix of extrememly excited and terrified because I love the series and I need the show to be just as good.

  4. I have not read the books you mentioned but I do love the idea for Evelyn Hardcastle! I have the book on my Kindle so I’ll check it out 😀 I would love to see The Bone Witch trilogy adapted especially with its two different timeline perspectives.

    1. Oooh I hope you enjoy Evelyn Hardcastle! It was super interesting!

I haven’t read The Bone Witch, but I’ve heard good things! And two timelines is always really interesting for TV shows.

  5. Evelyn Hardcastle would definitely make a fantastic limited series! Someone needs to make it happen.
Ever since Leigh Bardugo called the Grishaverse show a “high budget fan fiction”, I’ve been really scared 😅
SyFy did buy the rights to The Raven Cycle but that’s been yearss. It was mentioned way back then, but Maggie nor anyone else ever said anything else about it so I’ve sadly given up hope on that one.

    1. Right, it would be so good! It could have such a cool, creepy vibe.

“High budget fanfiction” does not bode well for an adaptation 😬

Ahhh noooooooo. I guess we can always hope! Maybe some day we’ll get a Raven Boys adaptation!

  6. There are so many good ones on here!! YES to Six of Crows, though!! I’ve been trying to do a dream cast post where Inej is done by Zendaya but now I’m having second thoughts and I can’t find anyone that would be perfect for being Kaz… also, I missed Thursday but can I still do this? 🙂

    1. Yes, so glad you agree! 😀 Ooooh Zendaya would be great, but also maybe Lana Condor as Inej and Zendaya as Nina 👀👀 I have no idea who I’d want as Kaz, though.

And yes, of course! I’d love to see your thoughts! 💕
