How to: use Goodreads like a pro

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Today on my how to series, we’re talking about how to use Goodreads like a pro. If you happen to not know what Goodreads is, it’s like Facebook but for books. You can keep track of your TBR and what books you’ve read, and can make shelves for nearly anything you want. You can rate and review books on it. Essentially every book you can think of is on Goodreads, and it’s a great way to find other book lovers.

However, even if you know what Goodreads is, there are some things about it you might not know. So today, I thought we’d go through and I could show you some of the features available on Goodreads.

Quick disclaimer: I’m not trying to say that I’m an expert or the best at this, by any means. These are honestly just things I’ve found work for me, and that I wanted to know when I started my blog.

Recommendations

Did you know Goodreads will give you recommendations based on books you’ve read? There are two places to find this feature: the top under “browse” and down along the side.

Once there, you can choose the shelf or genre you want to get recommendations for. These recommendations are based on your ratings of other books, so the more books you rate, the better recommendations.

You can also indicate if you’re not interested in a book.

Finally, you can recommend books to other people, ask for recommendations, and see which books you’ve marked as not interested.

Finding different editions of books

On Goodreads, you can also specify which edition of a book you own/read. This is useful for keeping track of how many pages you’ve read as some editions have more or fewer pages. It’s also fun to look at the different covers of popular books.

Fun Goodreads features

There are so many other great things about Goodreads. There are giveaways, author interviews, groups for readalongs, discussions, quizzes, a way to track your favourite quotes. Some of my favourite groups are Top Five Wednesday, a weekly meme, Our Shared Shelf, Emma Watson’s book club, and Brilliant Books You’ve Never Heard Of.

Seeing your reading stats

You can also see stats of your reading. You can see the number of books and pages you’ve read over the years, and see how many books you’ve read from each publication year. This can be a fun blog post to do at the end of the year, too!

On “my books”, select “stats” near the top

Organizing your bookshelves

You can organize your shelves by number of ratings, number of pages, average rating, publication date, anything you’d want, really.
