Happy Monday, everyone! Even though I participate in giving Monthly Recommendations, I thought I would start my own where every couple weeks I give recommendations for a specific topic (also Monthly Recommendations has been a bit dead lately so). Today I’m doing recommendations for easy reads! In the summer, it’s sometimes nice to just read an easy book that you don’t have to think too much about.
Broken Things by Lauren Oliver (YA mystery): this is a short, fun, interesting, YA mystery book. I don’t read a ton of YA mystery, but this one is a lot of fun. It has some fantastical elements in it because the main characters love this fantasy book and write fanfiction about it. This was a super quick read and I highly recommend it.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch (science fiction): this book reads so much like an action movie. It’s a lot of fun, super interesting, and fairly thought-provoking. It’s kind of technical and has some technical aspects, but everything is explained really well. I cannot recommend this enough if you want action-packed sci-fi.
The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen (YA contemporary summer read): this is one of my favourite YA books and I read it almost every summer. It’s just a perfect summer read, honestly. It’s super cute and fun, and has a cool catering job setting.
The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella (adult contemporary): this was the first adult contemporary I read, and it’s so much fun. Honestly, please read it. It’s so funny and dumb, but in a cute way. There’s one part where the main character is trying to make hummus and says she’s trying to melt the chickpeas. It’s so funny.
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire (YA fantasy/fairy tale novella): this is a great, diverse, fun fairy tale-esque book. It’s super short, so it’s a really quick read, but the plot, setting, and characters are all great.
Haters by Alissa Valdes (YA contemporary): this book is so much fun, and I really need to reread it soon. It’s a great story about finding yourself and fitting in. It isn’t the best written book ever, and it’s definitely a product of it’s time in that there are some problematic aspects of it. But it’s still a lot of fun and super easy to read.
The Martian by Andy Weir (science fiction, space!): I feel like everyone has either read this book or seen the movie at this point, but if you haven’t, do it!! This book is so funny and easy to read. Again, it’s kind of technical, but everything is explained really well. I highly recommend the audiobook because the narrator does a fantastic job.
So those are some of my favourite easy reads! Have you read any of these? What were your thoughts? What are some of your favourite easy reads? Let me know!
Thanks for reading! xx
Broken Things is great! The way Summer comes across over time and the fanfic thing works so well.

Ahhh so glad you agree! And yes, I loved that! I loved how there were bits of the story and the fanfic throughout!

Oh it’s interesting that Dark Matter is on this list because for some reason I’d been assuming it was a kind of dense sci-fi read? But I’m happy to hear it’s quick and action packed, that makes me want to move it up on my TBR!

There’s definitely some heavy-ish sci-fi elements, but I thought they were explained fairly well and didn’t bog down the story too much. I definitely didn’t find it dense. It honestly reads like an action movie, so like the amount of detail you’d need to understand/enjoy a sci-fi action movie is about how much detail you get in this book.
I hope you enjoy it when you get to it!

Dark Matter and The Martian are both on my TBR! I’m hoping to get to them (semi-)soon, but we’ll see. And I second the Every Heart a Doorway rec!

The Undomestic Goddess is one of my favorite cozy books of all time. I 100% think everyone should read it if they need an in-between book to not get in a slump

I’ve read the Sophie Kinsella book! If you really liked The Undomestic Goddess, then you should also read ‘Can You Keep A Secret?’ and ‘Twenties Girl’ by Kinsella – they’re my faves of her books. Also try some Melissa Nathan ones – she published 5 books before she passed away from cancer, and they’re all really light-hearted funny reads. There’s ‘Pride, Prejudice and Jasmine Field’ which is a P&P retelling, ‘Persuading Annie’, ‘The Nanny’, ‘The Waitress’ (one of my faves) and ‘The Learning Curve’ which was published posthumously. The Nanny and The Waitress are that cusp between New Adult and Adult, in terms of the main character’s age. I hope you get to try some of them!

Ooooh I’ll definitely have to check them out! I love Kinsella’s writing, so I’m always interested in which ones people love!
And I’ll definitely look into those as well! I’m always looking for New Adult books! Thank you for your recommendations!

I’m re-reading The Truth About Forever now, I read it years ago and just found out it is part of the Romance Package on Audible, so I decided to do a reread 🙂
