Thursday’s Top 4: books that could have been shorter

Happy Thursday, everyone! Find out more about Thursday’s Top 4 here! It’s basically a meme I started mainly for myself, but anyone can participate! Visit this page for the upcoming topics 🙂

This week the topic is books that could have been shorter! Last week we did books that could’ve been longer, so I thought we’d do the opposite this week. A lot of the time, I enjoy long books. But there are some books that drag on and just need to finish.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

Though I love this book a lot, there were a couple parts that dragged for me. Both times, I get it. The character is in shock and panicking and we’re supposed to feel the dread he feels and feel how time passes slowly in those instances. But, as a reader, I don’t want to feel bored? Alas, I still rated this book 5 stars so clearly I wasn’t too bothered at the time.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman

There were just some parts of this book that were a bit much. Overall, I really enjoyed it, but I thought there were some scenes that could’ve been removed.

A Conjuring of Light by V. E. Schwab

I’m sorry for not loving this series as much as everyone else does, but this book was so long. I think if I was in love with this series, I would’ve loved how long this book was. But I don’t love it, and the things I dislike about it were more prominent when it was longer.

I don’t think I’ve ever talked about this book, and it’s not even that long (just under 400 pages). But there are some parts that drag and, looking back, were unnecessary. Like, at the time, they were interesting to read, but now that I’ve finished the book, they didn’t really add anything. But this is the only book I’ve read that takes place in my city, so that was cool!

So those are some books I wish were shorter! Have you read any of these? Do you agree? Are there any books you wish were shorter? Let me know!

  1. OMG, I am SO WITH YOU on American Gods. I am glad I read it, and I think it was a neat book, but I think with some more (perhaps drastic) editing it could have been a truly amazing book. (On the other hand, it won BOTH the Hugo and Nebula Awards, so what do I know? 😉 )

  2. In general I feel like a lot of books should be shorter, but the goldfinch is like a weird book (even if I love it) and while I thought it dragged on for a bit as well, I think maybe it would’ve gotten more criticism of too many things happening after each other and needed that space to breathe

  3. I haven’t read most of these, but I definitely agree with you about American Gods! I really enjoyed it, but probably would’ve loved it more had it been cut down a bit.
