This week the topic is books with bad endings. For me, an ending can make or break a book, so I think they’re one of the most important parts of a book.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

Probably my least favourite ending ever. It’s just so bad and leaves me with such a bad taste, you know? I love the rest of the book though.

The Translation of Love by Lynne Kutsukake

Everything was too prettily wrapped up, and the book just kind of,, ended.

Women Talking by Miriam Toews

I think the ending of this book was good and realistic, but I was still left unsatisfied. I just wanted more in the end.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

We all know my thoughts on this book. Ultimately, I didn’t like the ending and thought it was a cop-out.

  1. I don’t know but I really loved the ending of Before I Fall. For me, she was always meant to die. That’s why trying to change that just led to waking up still in the loop. For me, it was never about saving her life but I guess she was given a chance to come to terms with her own death. And to do that, she needed to realize that her previous actions had consequences which led to the decline of some other girl’s mental health. But that’s just me, I get that we are all different. Just wanna share my thoughts.

    1. I totally agree that she was always meant to die! I actually liked that aspect of the ending. It was more her actions on that day. If you think about the way she acted regularly (before she died the first time) compared to the last day, it was totally different. And I feel like her family members and friends would have noticed and it would have put her death in a weird light, if that makes any sense?

      Basically, there are a lot of warning signs for those who are about to commit suicide, and she checked off pretty much all the boxes. And I feel like her friends and family would have been left thinking she committed suicide, which she didn’t.

      BUT I could also be reading WAY into it. I totally agree with everything you say, though, and think her dying was the right choice and the point.

  2. I totally agree about Caraval! I hated how all the terrible but delicious drama just got… reversed? By magic? I don’t buy it. If some of the damage had stuck, I might have been okay with the magic-makes-it-better trope.
