Woman of the Month: firsts from the midterm elections

Woman of the Month is a feature on my blog where each month I highlight a woman in the world who I think garners recognition. I started this mainly to increase Girl Power and empowerment, and because there’s a lot of women I feel are overlooked and I wanted to bring attention to them.

This month, I thought I’d do something a little different. As many of you know, there was an election earlier this month. And there were a ton of firsts, and I thought I’d highlight some of the women who made history this month, instead of highlighting one specific woman.

Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland: First Native American Congresswomen

Veronica Escobar: First Latina Congresswoman From Texas

Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib: First Muslim Women In Congress

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Youngest Woman Elected To Congress

Ayanna Pressley: First Black Woman To Represent Massachusetts

Summer Lee: First Black Woman to Represent Southwestern Pennsylvania

Sylvia Garcia: First Latina Congresswoman From Texas

Lina Hidalgo: first immigrant and first Latina ever elected Harris County judge

I’m sure there were so many others that I missed, but still. It’s crazy to me that it’s 2018 and there’s just now the first Native American and Muslim women in congress. But, progress is progress, and I’m looking forward to the blue wave!

Thanks for reading! xx

  1. I’m in the district that elected Sharice Davids and she’s also LGBT+! ❤ ❤ I don't remember who the person is, but there's another woman who might be the first lesbian mother elected. All of it warms my heart.
