So, you may have seen my Decluttering my Goodreads post last week, and I talked about moving a book to a new shelf. I wanted to write a post about this new shelf, mainly to hold me accountable and also because I thought someone might be interested (probably not, but I’m nosy so I’d be interested). So here are the rules for and books on my new shelf.
Rules
- Books added to this list have to have been on my TBR for more than 3 years
- Books on this shelf must be considered within two years of being added to the shelf (so being on my TBR for five years in total): this doesn’t mean I have to read the books within five years, but I have to reconsider whether I’m interested in reading them and will likely get to them
- Exceptions: books that were on my TBR for longer at the time of making this post (so books added from 2012-2014 have until 2020 to be considered)
- Classics and books by my favourite authors don’t count
- Books then have another two years to be read and then must be removed
- Every year, I’ll choose five books to read. If I don’t read them, I can save one. The rest have to go
I know this is fairly long-term, but it makes me feel productive. Also, I’m in law school and realistically won’t get a ton of reading done in the next two or three years anyway, so this allows for that.
The books
So I went through all the books added to my TBR up until 2017 and these are the ones on this list
- The Uninvited by Liz Jensen
- Slide by Jill Hathaway
- The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
- Girl, Stolen by April Henry
- Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia
- The Realm of Possibility by David Levithan
- Bright Young Things by Anne Godbersen
- A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
- The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
- Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell
- The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Books I removed in the process
- Beauty by Robin McKinley: I’m just no longer interested in reading this.
- The End of Harry Potter? by David Langford: there’s so much criticism of Harry Potter out there that I don’t think I need to read a book on it.
- A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel: I have no idea why I added this and don’t think I’m interested anymore.
So, these are the books I need to consider and (hopefully) read soon! Have you read any of these? Which should I prioritize? Let me know!
Thanks for reading! xx
This is an awesome idea! I really loved The Thirteenth Tale. Highly recommend that one!

I loved this post – and I love the idea of decluttering your shelf.
Sometimes, I feel as though my TBR pile is longer than average life expectancy so I think I’ll definitely be doing my own little spring cleaning soon.

Thank you!!
“longer than average life expectancy” made me laugh! I totally get that, too! There are so many good books to read, and so little time

Great idea! I try to go through and declutter my tbr at least once a year. Something new I started this year for my yearly challenge and will continue with, is reading at least 2 books a month that I already own. It’s really held me accountable and has helped me to make a dent….Although I feel like my tbr is never ending!

Thank you! That’s such a good idea! I think I’m going to try to do something like that for next year!
