Tag Tuesday: My Bad Reading Habits Tag

Happy Tuesday, everyone! And welcome to another Tag Tuesday! I hope all is well and that you’re getting excited for the Christmas season. Today we’re doing the My Bad Reading Habits Tag, which I was tagged for by the lovely Orangutan Librarian and Callum! They both have wonderful blogs that you should check out if you haven’t already.

The point of this tag is basically to call yourself out about your bad reading habits. Which is a good thing to do every once in a while. So, here are some of my bad reading habits!

Counting pages

This was one of Callum’s that I completely agreed with. I am obsessed with counting the pages until the end of a section or chapter. I don’t really care all that much about counting the number of pages I’ve read, but I like knowing the number of pages until I could stop if I wanted to. It’s so bad. “Okay so five more pages until the end of this chapter, and then the next chapter is eleven pages. So I could finish this chapter and the next chapter and then sleep.”

Not using the library

This is so bad because I love and fully support libraries. But I can’t remember the last time I went to my local library. Which sucks because it’s a great library. But I’m pretty sure my card expired like seven years ago. We just have so many books that we own that I want to read, and I have a Kindle which means books are cheaper. So I never really feel the need to go to the library. HOWEVER, when I finish school (if that’ll ever happen) and get an adult job and have (hopefully) more time to pleasure read, I plan on using my library as much as possible.

Mood reading and ignoring my TBR

You may have noticed I rarely do TBR posts, and when I do, they’re for longer periods of time. That’s because I’m such a mood reader. I only really read what I feel like reading and don’t like forcing myself to read something I’m not currently interested in. But that means that books I am interested in but put on a TBR, I tend to ignore or put off for ages. Sigh.

Adding books to my TBR simply because the cover is pretty

I think I did an entire TT4 post about cover reads fairly recently, but there are so many books where I just like the cover and add them to my TBR. Recently, the two biggest offenders of this have been Little Fires Everywhere and the Silence of the Girls. But just LOOK at those covers. How could I not want them?

Reading where I’m not supposed to be reading

I have a confession: sometimes I bring my book to work and read. Not even always on my breaks. Occasionally I read at my desk. I know, I know. Fiona, I’m so sorry. BUT I only did it when my computer was busy doing things and I couldn’t do anything. I was also the kid that read in class.

Actually, all three of me and my siblings have gotten in trouble for reading in class. One time, the teacher called my parents to tell them my brother was reading in class, and my mom was like “had he finished his work? yes? so he wasn’t doing anything wrong? …..um well he comes from a family of readers so idk what to tell you?” and then THE SAME TEACHER called my parents three years later because my sister was reading in class and they had pretty much the same conversation. My mom was like “guess she takes after her brother” and the teacher just sighed and hung up lmao

Never reading new releases

I never read new releases (almost never). I so bad at following authors and publications and never know when things are being released, or even if authors have new books. And I’m so bad at reading new releases. On the one hand, it’s not bad because I tend not to fall into the hype too much. But on the other hand, I’m never up-to-date and I find out about books months later.

I tag: JoeCaidyn, and Rebecca. Sorry if you’ve done this tag already, and as always, no pressure!!

Thank you all for reading! What are your bad reading habits? Do we have any of the same ones? Let me know!

  1. I also read where I’m not supposed to (yes, I read for pleasure while I’m at work sometimes). And I have a hard time reading new releases too. However, I’ve gotten over my “not using the library” bad habit. Partly because I can check out ebooks from them now! Makes using my library even easier.

  2. I’m guilty of all of these apart from the pretty covers one. I remember getting told off for reading in school too. I used to bring the smallest, most inconspicuous book I could find and read it sneakily under the desk, hehe.

  3. I count pages, too! And then more often then not I will keep going if I see it is only a few pages to go until the end of the current chapter. I don’t know why I am like this.

I need to be better about using the library. I am fortunate to have one maybe 3/4 mile from my house but honestly I don’t even know if I have been inside? I haven’t been to the library since I moved from San Diego a little over 6 years ago, and that hurts me.

I’ve been tempted to read at my desk, but can’t bring myself to do it! I get interrupted a lot and don’t want to have to explain hehe.

    Great post, Ally!

    1. Same!!! I’m like “it’s only five pages, I can finish this chapter”.

I know! I love libraries, it’s just a bit of a hassle to go some times. Which is sad and I should really just go.

      Haha that’s totally fair!

      Thanks so much, Kaleena!

  4. Well this is extremely relatable. One of the first things I do is count pages and I also tend to subconsciously judge books by the cover 😳Plus basically all my reading is based off of mood reading. don’t even ask how I get through my required reading because I myself am at a loss as to how 😂😂
