25 Bookish Facts About Me

Hi friends! I hope your week has been going well! Today I thought I’d do a post on 25 Bookish Facts About Me, which I was tagged for by Ellyn and Rebecca, two of the best blogging buddies I know. Definitely check out their blogs because they’re both the best! The gist of this post is to post (you guessed it) 25 bookish facts. So, let’s get into it!

  1. I don’t have a favourite book. I had a really hard time choosing favourites of anything, so choosing favourite book is something that I would literally never be able to do.
  2. I barely read classics, but I really want to read more. When I was younger, I tried to read a bunch of the classics everyone has read, which are mainly books written by old white men, and I just couldn’t get over the racism and misogyny. But recently I was given a list of classics written by women, and good classics written by men, and I’m super excited to read them.
  3. I’ve only listened to two full audiobooks in my life. One was being listened to by my dad and my best friend’s dad in the car while they were driving us home from camp, so we were forced to listen to it. The other was the Martian by Andy Weir and it was because I was concussed and couldn’t read. The audiobook was amazing for it, and I highly recommend it. I just find them hard to pay attention to. I get distracted super easily, so audiobooks are hard for me.
  4. I come from a super bookish family. Both my mom and dad love reading, and both my siblings read a ton. You can pretty much give books to all any one of us and we’ll be happy.
  5. I remember the first day I learned how to read. My teacher when I was three taught me one day at school. I don’t remember the book, but I remember her sitting down with me and teaching me how to read.
  6. There are some really specific topics that will make me immediately interested in a book. Heists, kidnappings, cults, and tournaments will almost always convince me to read a book.
  7. I also love weird titles. Titles are almost just as important to me as the cover. If a book has a good title that I like, I’ll probably add it to my TBR without reading what it’s about.
  8. I love really specific and weird settings. Some of my favourite books take place in weird settings. I did a couple posts about these a while ago, so go check those out!
  9. I find it hard to connect with book characters in general. So whenever there’s a tag and the question is “which book character do you relate to/connect with/see yourself in”, I never know what to say.
  10. But conversely, I don’t have to relate to or connect with characters to enjoy a book, per se. As long as I’m not annoyed by the characters and like them as characters or people, I’ll probably enjoy the book.
  11. Usually, the most important thing in a book for me is the writing. If the writing is good, I can often overlook a slow plot or poor characters. Not always, but often enough. Sometimes the writing is just so good, I get distracted by it and don’t really care about the other parts.
  12. For some reason, this year I read a ton of books that take place in Asia, specifically Japan, or focus on Asian characters. I can think of four books that I’ve read this year that either take place in Japan or have characters of Asian descent.
  13. I have a hard time disconnecting the art from the artist, so if there’s controversy surrounding an author, it’s fairly likely I won’t read their books. Sometimes, I find out about the controversy after I’ve read the book, but a lot of the times I find it hard to overlook controversy and when authors have done shitty things ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  14. I’m actually pretty good about reading books I already have. I know there’s a thing in the bookish world where people will buy books when they have unread books. And while I obviously do that too, I’m actually pretty good at reading the books I own too.
  15. I want posters of so many book covers. There are some book covers I just want to stare at all day, and want them as posters so I can put them on my wall and do just that.
  16. I reread a lot. I never really understood people who don’t reread books. Like, if you enjoyed a book, wouldn’t you want to read it again? To relive what you enjoyed? For me, obviously yes.
  17. I do this thing where if I enjoy a book by an author, I’m super hesitant to read anything else by that author because I don’t want to ruin my feelings about the first book I read by them. Does that make sense?
  18. I tend to like standalones more than series. I think sometimes series aren’t well planned and have issues and just like the plot to be done in one book.
  19. I sometimes read the first book of a series as a standalone. There are SO MANY series that I’ve done this to. I have a list you can see here. It’s so hard because I love most of the first books and go to recommend them and then have to remember they’re a part of a series.
  20. I don’t really do bookish merch? I like bookish mugs (because I love mugs) and I like posters, but I don’t really have any other bookish merch. I especially don’t really understand FunkoPops. Idk, they’re just not for me.
  21. I have read one ARC in my life and it was because I won it in a Goodreads giveaway. I just know that if I get ARCs, I’ll feel like I have to read them and then I’ll resent them and never read them. So I just don’t bother.
  22. I would love to get a bookish tattoo but I don’t know what to get. I think I might get “I am, I am, I am” from the Bell Jar, or maybe a Bell Jar, or something Harry Potter themed, or something else. But I’m also a chicken and haven’t gotten any tattoos yet so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  23. I fully support DNFing books. I never got people who had to finish a book. There are too many books to read and too little time. My thinking is if I’m not enjoying it, I might as well not bother.
  24. I love my Kindle and will fight anyone was says ebooks are not real books. I don’t think this is as much of an issue now, but I remember when I first got my Kindle, so many people were against it. There was still so much controversy about ebooks not being real books, and me reading on my Kindle wasn’t really reading. And I was always on the Kindle side of the argument. And I love my Kindle!! There are so many good things about it!! Please just let me read it peace!
  25. I’m gonna say it: book snobbery is the worst and it is still so rampant in the book world. I’ll probably write a whole post on this at some point, but book snobbery is the worst and even though the book world is fairly good, there’s still so much that exists. Just let people enjoy reading!!!

So there we have it, 25 bookish facts about me! What are some bookish facts about you? Are there any of mine you agree with? Let me know!

  1. That’s 2 more audiobooks than I’ve finished! Haha. I’m really not bog on audiobooks myself. For whatever reason, I find it hard to pay attention and don’t absorb as much of the detail.

Great post! I love all your bookish facts.

  2. I love this!! I don’t think I have a favorite book either. I can’t listen to ficiton on audiobook, but I can listen to non-fiction. I have a hard time following plot when I am not reading but I guess I can get the gist of what they are saying in non-fiction.

  3. I agree with a lot of these! The relating to a character thing is always difficult for me too, I never really connect with characters that way.
And standalones are definitely the best! I’m not the biggest fan of series lately, especially when the first book works perfectly fine as a stand-alone.
    Great list!

    1. So glad you relate! Sometimes not relating to characters is okay because I don’t need to relate to enjoy a book, but it’s annoying too haha.
And yes, exactly!!! I feel like there are so many series where the first book totally works as standalones.
      Thank you!

  4. I so agree with DNFing! I mean, why would you push yourself through a book you really don’t want to read? There’s no joy in doing that.
Well, I agree with a lot of other things too. 😀 The tattoo! I’ve been thinking so much about some bookish tattoo but I just haven’t figured out what I’d want to keep on my skin forever. And I’m pretty convinced it will hurt like hell so there’s that too..

  5. I think I would laugh if someone tried to tell me ebooks aren’t real books. I was a little hesitant to get a Kindle at first because I was so used to paper books, but now I love it and find switching back and forth a little jarring sometimes. But a book is a book no matter what format it’s in, in my opinion. Yay Kindles!

  6. Great list of facts! Rereading is amazing, who doesn’t want to reread an old fave, sometimes rereading also helps you gain a more broad perspective and you pick up on things you didn’t realise. I feel especially if there’s a long gap between the first read and reread, your own personal experiences mean that you might experience a complete shift in opinions about the book and characters!
I have a hard time disconnecting the art from the artist, so if there’s controversy surrounding an author, it’s fairly likely I won’t read their books. – feel you on this. Same with actors and actresses and avoiding films of actors and actresses who’ve worked with Woody Allen or supported him unless they’re part of ensemble cast. We can all make a difference, even if it’s small, in this way.

    1. Thank you!! And exactly! Don’t you want to reread the things you loved and see why you loved them?
And yes! I do the same with actors/actresses/directors/etc. I do my best to not support their productions. Even if it’s a little thing, if everyone does the little thing, it makes a big impact

  7. I loved this post! 💕💕💕

15 – I’ve never thought about it before but book posters would actually be so so good!
16 – I love re-reading books and I wish I did it more, I’ll never understand how some people never re-read their favourites!
19 – I also like to read some first books as standalones! Sometimes I just don’t feel the need to continue on with the series!
20 – I don’t do bookish merch either, it just seems too expensive and I don’t know if I would actually use it that often. And, I also love mugs but honestly, I just own wayy too many already.
22 – I plan on getting a bookish tattoo at some point too, but I’m chickenshit so I keep putting it off lol.
24 – EBOOKS ARE REAL BOOKS! Who said they weren’t??? Dude, I will fight these people with you!
25 – Book snobbery is the WORST, why can’t we all just get along???

    1. Ahhh thank you!! 💕
      15. Right??? I think we need to make it happen.
      16. I know! I don’t understand why people wouldn’t want to experience their favourite books again!
      19. So glad you agree!! Sometimes if there’s enough closure, I don’t feel the need to continue the series.
      20. I KNOW I have too many mugs lol
      22. SAME I just need to do it and not think about it too much lol
      24. THANK YOU!! I feel like it’s not so much of an argument now, but it definitely was when I first got my Kindle
      25. Yes!! Just let people read what they want!

  8. I find it so cool that your family is bookish, that’s amazing! And I get what you mean about reading books you own, I think I’m pretty good at that too, I hate unread books on my shelves hahaha 🙂

  9. Love this post! Honey, I’ve never even finished a single audiobook, so I salute you! Hahaha. And kindles and ebooks are some of the best inventions in the world. I don’t know where I’d be without my trusty Paperwhite! 😂
