Recommendations for… standalones

Even though I participate in giving Monthly Recommendations, I thought I would start my own where every couple weeks I give recommendations for a specific topic. Today I’m doing recommendations for standalone novels! I feel like series are so popular, and a lot of people overlook standalones, so I thought I’d recommend some of my favourites! I tried to do books I haven’t talked about 900 times before, too, so I’m not too repetitive. ALSO most of these turned out to be fairly long books, so this would also be good if you’re thinking of investing some time into your read.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett (3.5 stars)

I read The Help last year and loved it! It’s such a heartwarming story and is so fun to read. I definitely recommend watching the movie too!

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (5 stars)

A classic feminist novel, but also such a great novel overall (I think). This book is so interesting and so well-written, and I highly recommend it. I’ve only seen the first two episodes of the TV show, so I can’t comment on it, but if you’ve watched it, I’d love to know what you thought!

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt (5 stars)

I read this a few summers ago now and was completely blown away by it. I read it in about three days, despite it being over 500 pages. It’s just so well-written and has such great characters.

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk (5 stars)

If you’ve seen the movie but haven’t read the book, read the book!!! The movie is great too, but the book is amazing. Honestly, it has one of my favourite endings ever.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (4.5 stars)

I just read Pachinko this past summer and oh my god it’s so good!!!!!! The characters and the relationships and the atmosphere and the story. It completely blew me away and I cannot recommend it enough!

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (5 stars)

My review for this is coming Friday! So I won’t say too much except wow, please read this book.

So those are some recommendations for standalone novels! Have you read any of these? What are your favourite standalones? Let me know!

Thanks for reading! xx

  1. The Help is wonderful. I also read it last year! I listened to the audiobook though, and it was soooooo good. I haven’t read The Handmaid’s Tale yet but I have seen the entire first season of the show, and I really enjoyed it. Never Let Me Go is one of my absolute favourite books of all time!! I can’t wait for your review!

    1. It’s just so much fun to read! And all the characters are so great! You should definitely try the book, though I think the tv show is pretty good too (I only saw the first two episodes but they were good). And yay!! It’s so good 😊
