In the spirit of popular opinion week, I wanted to talk about some of my favourite tropes! Because I am trash for certain tropes you guys. There are some tropes I will never not enjoy. If there is a fic or a book with these tropes, I will probably read it and probably love it. Some of these are total trash tropes and some are overused but I love them all either way.
The “we have to pretend to be dating/married” trope
This one will always get me, especially when it’s with two characters who are OBVIOUSLY pining for each other. Idk what it is about this trope, but I am total trash for it.
Examples include: I actually don’t know if I have an example of a book?
The “we have to sleep in the same bed” trope or the “can you sit by the bed while I fall asleep?” trope
Similar to the above one, and I love it. I’m trash guys, trash I tell you.
Examples include: Anna and the French Kiss, Before I Fall.
The bad guy/good girl trope
Even though I think it’s slightly damaging and stereotypical etc. I still love it. This isn’t the “hot guy and secretly attractive nerdy girl” trope or the “damaged boy is SAVED by equally damaged girl” (or vice versa) trope, because I dislike those. But the bad, tough boy who’s secretly mushy inside and the traditional good girl. Again, total trash.
Examples include: James and Lily Potter, Nate and Bronwyn from One of Us is Lying.
Taking down the government
I know it’s clichéd, but I love it. I can’t help it. I think it’s just my rebellious streak coming out? Because I know in real life, the chances of me actually doing anything to take down the government are fairly low (except for the fact that I want to go into government so I can destroy and rebuild Canada’s healthcare system but that’s a discussion for another day).
Examples include: Nimona, Legend, the Hunger Games, and Red Rising.
Tournaments in fantasy books
I’ve mentioned this before, but I love tournaments in fantasy novels. They’re just so interesting and I love them.
Examples include: A Gathering of Shadows, the Hunger Games.
Those are some of my favourite tropes! What are yours?
Thanks for reading! xx
OMG I LOVE THE FIRST TWO TROPES, TOO!! They’re just the best.

I’m a sucker for the pretend we’re dating trope! I’m thinking an example of that is the Hunger Games ☺️

I like the bad guy becomes good guy (or at least semi-good guy/associate)
Game of Thrones, Red Rising, The Demon Cycle, The Raven Cycle, Lorien Legacies, and even Malfoy and HP have a short-lived moment or co-operation.

I too am a sucker for the “pretend we’re dating” trope. The Hunger Games is an example of that (as mentioned in an earlier comment) but I also enjoyed it in Sorcery and Cecilia: or the Enchanted Chocolate Pot.

Maybe it’s because Katniss is pretending but we know from the start that Peeta isn’t?

What a coincidence. I just scheduled a post similar to this though it’s titled “Trope I won’t Get tired of” but well, we have same picks. I enjoyed reading your post. 🙂

I ordinarily don’t care for the “take down the government” trope but Hunger Games did it to perfection and made it seem empowering. I think it helped that Katniss didn’t voluntarily do it but came to accept that she was the figurehead and she had to carry it through. Also… Katniss. ❤️
And the bad guy and good girl trope will never get old. A Walk to Remember did it best though… and Langdon was so hottttt.

Yes the Hunger Games did it so well, for the exact reasons you said!! I loved how Katniss just slowly accepted that it was something she had to do.
I’ve still never seen A Walk to Remember, but it’s my best friend’s favourite movie, so I’m sure I’ll have to watch it soon!

Omg, I love all of these tropes! I especially love the whole taking down the government thing and would definitely love to take down a whole bunch of crappy governments in today’s world 😂

Oh I LOVE the “we have to pretend we’re married/dating” trope. But the ones I love the most are the ones where they’re enemies but inevitably fall for each other 🙂

I love that trope too!!! It’s best when it’s enemies who have to pretend to date and then end up falling in love
