Books I’m reluctant to read

Today’s post is all about books I’m reluctant to read. They’re mainly popular books I’m a bit iffy on, but only for minor reasons. Unlike yesterday’s post, these are books that I could probably be talked into reading.

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

I’ve heard SO MANY good things about this from people I trust, but I hate the cover and I’ve been off contemporary/YA romances recently. It does sound like a really cute summer read though, so maybe I’ll give it a shot?

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

Again, EVERYONE loves this book so much. But it just doesn’t appeal to me? I’m not really sure why though.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

I don’t know why but I feel like I can’t get committed to this series. Which is dumb because there’s only three and I should be able to blast through them pretty quickly? I also feel like I’ve heard SO MANY good things from everyone that I’ll go in with too-high expectations and I’ll be disappointed. I think I’ll honestly just watch the movie and call it a day.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

I just hate the cover. I’m SORRY but it’s one of my least favourite covers ever. I know that’s such a small thing but I honestly hate it. Like, the cover is basically the only reason I don’t want to read this book, but what can I say, I hate it.

So those are some books I’m iffy about reading. If you’ve read any of them, please let me know what your thoughts were! I’d love to know if they’re worth it!

  1. I do agree that Cinder’s cover is horrible. But I read this quite a while ago and loved it so much! Hopefully you can get over the weird cover and read it because it’s so good ☺️

  2. I adore Since You’ve Been Gone and Cinder! The cover for the former is horrendous (I have this issue with covers that have real people on them haha), but the stories for each are super fun! Definitely recommended! If you read them as an e-book version, you won’t have to look at either cover. Hehe. 🙂

  3. I’ve actually read all of these! I admit that I did put Since You’ve Been Gone down when I first picked it up, but I decided to give it another go and I loved it! While I loved The Bear and the Nightingale, it seems like it’s hit or miss for a lot of readers. I think I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Cinder/The Lunar Chronicles because it was one of my first YA fantasy/scifi series, but to me, it really is a starter series. I also haven’t enjoyed its “bonus” installments too much, like the graphic novels and novellas.

Anddddd I feel like you may be expecting this buttt READ TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE!! I’m actually going to be doing a reread this month in anticipation for the Netflix adaptation next month! I admit that the 1st book is sort’ve your average cutesy YA contemporary, but books 2 and 3 (especially 3) have my heart!

    1. I thought you had! I think I might give Since You’ve Been Gone a try as a summer read. I think I missed the boat with Cinder and I would’ve loved it in high school or junior high, but to never know!

Aaaand OKAY maybe I’ll buy the three of them for my summer vacation and read them then! I’ve heard such good things and really do want to love it!

  4. Definitely ignore the cover when it comes to Cinder and give it a go. If you like fairytale retellings and a sci fi setting, I would recommend it! Since You’ve Been Gone was cute, but it wasn’t one of my favorites. And To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is adorable if you want a fluffy contemporary. 😋

  5. I am also iffy on The Bear and the Nightingale. I think it has to do with the cover. It looks like a boring inspirational type book. But I have had it recommended to me a TON of times. I just need to not judge it by the cover and suck it up and read it. (I’m also not a huge fan of the Cinder cover.) Great idea for a post!

  6. Save the Date was my first Morgan Matson book and I loved it so Since You’ve Been Gone is for sure on my TBR, although I’m wondering how much I’ll like it too. The Bear and the Nightingale sounds so good to me and I’m hoping I’ll love it like everyone else. TATBILB is a quick and fun read. not my favourite series, but so adorable. I adore The Lunar Chronicles and actually put off reading Cinder because it’s a sci-fi but it was so good. Hope you enjoy these books if/when you get to them!

  8. I love Since You’ve Been Gone. I would say it’s more about friendship and finding yourself than romance. It’s such a fun summer read.

  9. I want to read The Bear and the Nightingale, but I’m also hesitant to read it because I love the concept yet could see myself getting super disappointed by it. I will read it eventually, but it’s gonna be a while so the hype dies before I start reading.
