June was a really long, busy, emotional month for me. Basically, a lot happened, and they were either really good, great things, or really bad, sad things. So I didn’t get much (really any) reading done.

From around the internet
Because this month was rough, I didn’t find as many online reads. But the ones I did find were pretty great!
The timely and tragic lessons to be learned from celebrity suicides: by André Picard who’s a health writer for the Globe and Mail. He’s so great and he always writes such good pieces. This one came in the wake of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain’s suicides.
Toxic Masculinity, Domestic Violence, and Hockey: from some sports blog. This one is from 2016, but it’s relevant and super interesting. A player on the Montreal Canadiens (Alex Galchenyuk) was traded earlier this month. He’s previously been in the news when his neighbors called the police regarding domestic violence. The discussion here is largely because it was his girlfriend (fiancé?) being violent towards him, and how his team’s management largely tried to cover it up, which renewed a discussion in the hockey world about how we view abuse against sports stars and men in general. It’s been really interesting, and I highly recommend reading this piece. (honestly it’s just been a weird month in the hockey world)
Trump’s zero-tolerance policy inflicts anguish on kids – with toxic health impacts: by André Picard AGAIN. Honestly, he killed it this month. This article is about the health impacts (particularly mental health impacts, both short- and long-term) of separating children from their parents.
Terry Crews Details His Sexual Assault in Powerful Testimony to Senate: once again, I love Terry Crews with my whole heart. I cried reading his testimony.
Other news and highlights
Personal highlights: like I said, this month was filled with a lot of highs and a lot of lows. But the highs were really great.
- I had convocation!!!!!!! I’m officially a university graduate and have letters after my name!!!!! Convocation day itself was a ton of fun. My friends came over for breakfast and we all got ready together before heading to the university. We made my friends’ boyfriends’ follow us around with cameras and film us having brunch and getting ready and being all cute, and then put it in a cute video! I honestly have the greatest friends and am so glad to have met them.
- And because my mom’s the vice dean of my department, she was on stage and hugged me I walked across with my degree.
- I was reminded of my favourite scientific article ever, please go read it. My mom, brother, and I cried laughing about it for 45 minutes.
- I finally saw Black Panther!! It was great.
- We went rock climbing again and I climbed my first outdoor 5.9, which was rough but I did it!
- Again, my friends are the bestest friends and helped me through a minor life crisis.
- I enrolled in classes for law school!!!! It’s real and happening!!!
How was your month?
Thanks for reading! xx
