So this is two posts combined in one! Joe from Storeys of Stories hosts First Impression Friday every Friday, and I’ve wanted to participate but my reading doesn’t time well with it. And I saw the Try a Chapter Tag going around and wanted to do it as well. So I thought I’d combine the two!
So the rules for FIF:
- Talk about a book that you JUST STARTED!
- Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.
And the rules for the Try a Chapter Tag are pretty simple: you try a chapter from a selection of books to find out what you want to read! Because they’re so similar, I thought I’d combine them to help me decide what to read!
I’ve been doing this over the past couple of weeks and just recording my thoughts, so you may have seen that I’ve read some of these books by now.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
First impressions: the first chapter was so intriguing! It’s action-packed and fast-paced, and really sets the tone for how the book is going to go.
Prediction: I actually put this on my five-star predictions, but after reading the first chapter, I think it’ll be closer to four stars.
Verdict: I ended up taking this with me to a conference because I have the paperback, so it was easy to travel with. It ended up being four stars, and I loved every minute of it!
Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu
First impressions: pretty much how I expected it to start, if that makes sense? I read the first two chapters because they were both short, and it does a good job setting up the characters and story.
Prediction: four stars, probably.
The Leavers by Lisa Ko
First impressions: I read the first chapter and a half, and it was interesting! The first chapter was so good, and then the first half of the second chapter was good too. I put it down to have dinner, and never picked it up though, so idk what that says.
Prediction: I’m honestly not sure. I think this could be a case where it’s really well-written, but not all that interesting, if that makes sense? So probably 3-4 stars.
The Translation of Love by Lynne Kutsukake
First impressions: the first two chapters were so good! I’m already invested in the characters and want them to succeed and be okay.
Prediction: 4-5 stars!
So those are the four books I tried, and my thoughts on them!
Except for Dark Matter, it doesn’t sound like your decision of what to read next go much easier! Seems like you enjoyed all the samples.
Thanks for taking part in First Impression Friday!
