Discussion: series hoarding

I do this thing where I read the first book of a series and then never finish the series? I think for a lot of these it’s because the series wasn’t a series when I read the first book. It also might be because I like standalone books better generally? So I thought I’d do a post of the series I’ve started but haven’t finished.

Legend by Marie Lu

I love this book so much. It’s honestly so good and I adore it. But the second book in the series wasn’t out when I read it, so I never got back into it. My brother read them and said they were fine but he was disappointed with the last one. I’ll probably read them again at some point, but not any time soon.

Divergent by Veronica Roth

I read Divergent and Insurgent when they both came out and I had every intention of reading Allegiant. But I was super disappointed with the end of Insurgent and I just never got to it. My sister told me how it ends so I’ll probably never read Allegiant  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wither by Lauren DeStefano

I don’t know if this was meant to be a series, but I’m 99% sure it wasn’t when I first read it (but it’s totally set up to be so). I really enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it, but I wasn’t super attached to it and never continued.

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

I love this book. It’s one of my all-time favourites. But I didn’t know it was a series for the longest time (like, until summer of 2016 and I read it in at least 2011). My sister read the rest of the trilogy and LOVED it, but I still don’t think I’ll continue on. I was happy with the ending (although I do love Yelena and Valek so maybe I’ll read it just for them).

Evermore by Alyson Noël

I read this book forever ago (like junior high) and enjoyed it and had every intention of continuing the series, but again I just didn’t? I think I just never got around to getting the rest of the books. And now I think I’ve outgrown it. Reading the reviews on Goodreads is pretty funny though. Like this bit:

Recommends it for: Douchebags
Recommended to Kiki by: A douchebag

I might reread it just to see if it’s really that bad.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

This book just didn’t click with me, and I didn’t feel attached to any of the characters so I didn’t keep going. I also like cliffhanger-y endings, and I was happy with the ending. And the next book wasn’t out when I read it and I wasn’t attached enough to get it when it did come out.

Fury by Elizabeth Miles

I don’t remember much about this book except that I’m 99% sure the main character and her best friend keep track of the out-of-state license plates they see. If that’s the only thing I remember, there’s something wrong with this book.

Matched by Ally Condie

I like the first book of this series, but again I missed the boat. This is another case where the next book wasn’t out when I read this one and I wasn’t attached enough to get it. I heard it ended pretty poorly though, so I’m not too fussed about it.

????? by ??????

There was one other series I almost finished. I think I was almost done the second out of three (I’m pretty sure) and just stopped, literally in the middle of a sex scene. I can’t find that book anywhere though? So idk what it’s called. BUT it was about a girl who was really depressed and then she meets this guy (of course) who I’m pretty sure is an angel? and they obviously fall in love and there’s tension between the angel and the girl’s ex-best friend turned maybe friend. That’s all I remember. If this sounds familiar to you please let me know what it was called because this is driving me insane!

Are there any series you’ve started but not finished? Are there any on my list that I should keep reading? Let me know!

Thanks for reading! xx

  1. I have a few series like that and one of them is actually Legend by Marie Lu too! With that one I read the first which I loved, then I read the second which I didn’t like so I wasn’t really planning on reading the third anyway and then I wasn’t too excited by what I heard about it so now I just have Legend which I still read sometimes as a standalone! I’m also not going to read the rest of the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi because I enjoyed the majority of the first book but I didn’t like the end and again I’m not too hyped about what I’ve heard of the rest of the series! I also went through a huge Twilightey YA phase when that was a big thing so I am almost certain that there are books I read during that time that were series but I didn’t realise at the time so I have never read the whole series! 😂😂

  2. I do this other thing with series, where I don’t finish them because then they’re OVER AND DONE. For instance, I read and enjoyed Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series, but I put off reading the 13th and final book because I didn’t want the series to be over. It’s silly, but there it is.

Also, I read the entire Poison Story trilogy too, and I didn’t feel that the second and third books lived up to the promise of the first one. I plan on re-reading Poison Study and stopping there because I liked it best.

    1. Yes I totally get that too! I do that with TV shows a lot. I haven’t watched the last season of Bones in two years now just because I don’t want it to end!

I still re-read Poison Study quite a bit because I love the characters 🙂

      1. I haven’t re-read Poison Study since the first time I read it. It’s not in my plans for this year (I do annual reading challenges, and this year is focused on reading some “must read eventually” books) but I think next year will be a “read from my shelf” year so I can re-read it then. 🙂

  3. I posted a post yesterday about not finishing series … kinda haha. It started out that it was going to be a list of series I wasn’t going to finish but then I realized that I had 53 series I didn’t finish, so it turned more into a discussion on why I both love and hate series.

I hated the ending to the Divergent series! It was awful, so in my opinion its not worth finishing haha. I finished both Legend and Matched and enjoyed them, but not enough that I would push you to finish them. I don’t remember how they finished so obviously they weren’t that memorable!

    1. omg 53 is so many series! I’ll definitely have to check out your post 🙂

That’s what my sister said! She’s not a very opinionated person and it doesn’t take much to please her, but she vehemently hates the ending of the Divergent series. I plan on finishing Legend at some point, so it’s good to hear you enjoyed them!

  4. The Divergent books just get worse and worse, so I wouldn’t bother finishing them. Hahahaha. I liked the Legend trilogy, but wasn’t necessarily blown away by it. 🙂 I haven’t read any angel books that sound like what you described, but maybe it could be Angelfall or Fallen? Just a random guess!

    1. That’s what I’ve been hearing! I think I’ll probably finish Legend at some point, I just need the time to read them haha.
I’ve read Fallen, so it wasn’t that! And it wasn’t Angelfall, but it sounds super interesting and I think I might need to add it to my TBR now haha
