Top 5 Tuesday: books I loved that others didn’t

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme created by the lovely Shannah at the Bionic Bookworm. You can visit here for the upcoming topics! This is actually my first time participating in T5T because I always miss the post where she announces the topics. But I’m here today and on the ball!

This week’s topic is books I loved that others didn’t.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

I know people have so many issues with this book and I totally get it. But I always enjoy it when I read it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

This is one of my favourite books, but I know people who couldn’t finish it. I also get it, but again I just love it.

Looking for Alaska by John Green

This is my favourite John Green novel, but I know so many people who disliked it. I have a theory about John Green books, which I may or may not do a full post on, but it’s basically that we’re destined to only like one of his books. Alaska is mine I guess.

Wither by Lauren DeStefano

I actually really enjoy this book, but according to Goodreads, so many other people didn’t. It’s one of those books where I totally get where they’re coming from, but I still enjoyed it.

I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

Again, this is one of my all-time favourite books, but there are so many low ratings on Goodreads. I totally understand some of the comments, but I enjoy this book too much to be bothered by them.

Those are five books I like but others don’t! Any similarities or differences? Let me know!

Thanks to Shannah for providing the topics!!

  1. Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday! Glad to have you!
We seem to have VERY similar tastes! I LOVED Looking for Alaska, The Lovely Bones and I Am The Messenger. You’re right, they aren’t as well loved as I wish they were. Looking for Alaska is probably my favourite John Green as well. I felt it was so real and relatable. And the ending was VERY unexpected. And I Am The Messenger gets compared to The Book Thief which isn’t fair. They are totally different books! I loved them both just for very different reasons.
Thanks so much for participating – added you to the list 🙂

    1. Thank you!! 🙂
I feel the exact same way about Looking for Alaska! I think it really captured a lot of teenager problems and feelings. And I totally agree about I am the Messenger! I think people read the Book Thief first and go into it expecting them to be similar, but they’re completely different.

  2. Looking for Alaska made my list too! But I’ve enjoyed all of his books. I just love his writing. He is real and can hit me straight to the heart.

  3. You’re theory on john green is so interesting and i would have completely agreed before i read turtles last year…before then i loved loved loved tfios and although i still loved john green as an author i didn’t connect with any of his other books the same way or love them quite as much, but then i read turtles and fell in love with that too so the cycle has been broken, but i do totally see where you’re coming from, i know so many people who adore just one john green book!
