This week, the topic is books with bad endings that you liked. I personally love traditionally “bad” endings, if they’re done well. Obviously minor spoilers below, but nothing major.
Reason to Breathe by Rebecca Donovan
The ending of this book is very ambiguous and I, being the sociopath that I am, always assumed it was the worst outcome possible. But apparently this book was made into a trilogy, which is really annoying. I will probably never read it as this book is already a bit much for me, but you never know.
Everyday by David Levithan
Again, another ambiguous ending (you’ll notice a theme). I just love the ending of this book. Do I wish A and Rhiannon got to be together? Maybe. I haven’t decided. But I think the conclusion was great.
Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
I always picture the ending of this as way worse than I think it’s supposed to be. Basically, on pretty much the last page, Park receives what we assume to be a postcard from Eleanor that has three words on it, which are never specified. I think the three words are supposed to be “I love you” but I always think “leave me alone” or “stop writing me” but I think that’s just because I wasn’t a fan of this book ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Luxe series by Anna Godbersen
OKAY basically there’s one couple throughout this whole series that we’re supposed to root for, and 14 year-old me rooted hard for this couple. FINALLY at the very end of the last book, they can be together and the guy runs to the dock and proposes to the girl before she gets on a boat to Paris. And she basically says “thanks, but you’re my first love and I’m still young, so I’m going to Paris ALONE, thank you bye.” And 14 year-old me was SO HAPPY I loved so much that she was doing what she wanted to and wasn’t going to be held back by this guy. I just love it.
So those are my favourite “bad endings.” Which are yours? Any same ones?
Thanks for reading! Ally xx
