Top Five Wednesday: Genre Benders

Happy November! I can’t believe it’s already November. When the fuck did that happen??

Anyway, here’s the first edition of Top 5 Wednesday for November! I’m not really into the topics this month, so I’m only doing this one and the last one, but I think those ones super interesting so I’m excited for them!

Find more about T5W here! This week is genre benders, or books you have a hard time putting in one genre.

A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki

This book is kind of magical realism but not really? Kind of paranormal but not really? Kind of historical fiction but not really old enough? Idk you can read my review tagged above to see my thoughts.

Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi

This is one is very similar to A Tale for the Time Being except it would be old enough the be classified as historical fiction. But there’s some elements of magical realism, and some people call it a Snow White re-telling. I have a review coming next week for it so look for that for my thoughts!

Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

I have a hard time classifying this one because it’s a little too intense for YA but the writing is a little too simple for adult lit. And it’s not really a YA romance, but it’s also not really a contemporary. Let me know what you classify it as!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I’ve always considered the Hunger Games as dystopian-ish? It’s not fantasy, it’s based on our world, but it’s also not totally believable?

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

Again, kind of paranormal but not really. Kind of a mystery/thriller but not really. Let me know what you think it should be classified as!

Thanks for reading! Let me know what books you consider genre benders!

  1. I agree that The Hunger Games fits as a dystopian novel. It was probably the first dystopian YA I’d read, or at least the first one to do it well. Hmm. I’m sure I should have plenty to add to this list, but I can’t come up with any now. I’ll have to think about it more.

  2. That’s true about Wallflower and The Lovely Bones! I don’t really know what I’d call them either. I guess Wallflower didn’t really seem like YA in a way, but I can’t really remember anyway because I read it so long ago. It was also interesting that The Lovely Bones has paranormal aspects to it, I’d call a thriller still though. Great choices 🙂
