The Weirdest Books I’ve Ever Read

Do you ever read those books and then think to yourself “………..what the actual fuck?” Because that’s how I felt about these books. Luckily, there’s only two. HOWEVER. They are both very much “what the fuck” books. That’s the only way I can described them.

(there is swearing below, just be warned if you don’t do that kind of thing)

Betwixt by Tara Bray Smith

For three teenagers, dark mystery has always lurked at the corner of the eyes and the edge of sleep. Beautiful Morgan D’Amici wakes in her trailer park home with dirt and blood under her fingernails. Paintings come alive under Ondine Mason’s violet-eyed gaze. Haunted runaway Nix Saint-Michael sees halos of light around people about to die.

At a secret summer rave in the woods, the three teenagers learn of their true, changeling nature and their uncertain, intertwined destinies. Riveting, unflinching, beautiful, Betwixt shows a magic as complex and challenging as any ordinary reality.

I read this a while ago because my best friend brought it to my house when she was visiting. It’s fine. I read all 496 pages of it. It held my attention enough.

But like. What the actual hell happened? That I couldn’t tell you. It was a weird book. There was a lot I didn’t understand. There was a lot I didn’t try to understand. I just accepted it was weird and moved on.

The average Goodreads rating is 2.57, which is one of the lowest I’ve ever seen. I haven’t rated it because it was too long ago and I read it before I had Goodreads. But I do remember it being weird. And a lot of work to get through.

John Dies at the End by David Wong

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don’t put it down. It’s too late. They’re watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you’ll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it’s too late. You touched the book. You’re in the game. You’re under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why? You just have to trust me.

The important thing is this: The drug is called Soy Sauce and it gives users a window into another dimension. John and I never had the chance to say no. You still do. I’m sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind: None of this was my fault.

This book 100% without a doubt receives the Weirdest Fucking Book I’ve Ever Read award. I read it because my friend Jeremy recommended it. That was my first mistake (sorry 13 year-old Jeremy, but you were questionable).

It’s just so. fucking. weird. Like. I read this probably 6 years ago now. And I honestly think about it a lot because it was so weird. And like. It doesn’t make any sense?? There are so many weird things??

JOHN DOESN’T DIE??? EVER??? Not at the end, not at the beginning. I feel like at one point he’s in another dimension but not dead?

There’s a girl who lost her hand in a car accident. She has phantom limb syndrome, which hurts. At some point they find some Scooby-Do Ghost glasses one of them got from a Happy Meal, and she can see and use her hand. I wish I was kidding.

A character Todd is completely erased from existence. He’s never mentioned except when the two main characters are like “oh ya Todd was erased from existence, along with these other people.”

And don’t even get me started on Korrok. We won’t even go there.

Once again, I read this whole book. It wasn’t bad, per se. It held my attention for sure. It’s just fucking weird. I would recommend it if you have a weird/dark sense of humour and want to read something different.

Let me know if you’ve read either of these books and what you think of them! What are the weirdest books you’ve ever read?

xx

  1. This is a great post. I haven’t read either of those but they sound crazy! I’m currently reading A Clockwork Orange which is a very strong contender for the weirdest book I’ve ever read, but I’m also loving it?

  2. Hahaha -> “… what the actual fuck.” I totally agree with you hun, I’ve had plenty of moments like that reading. That was my experience reading Lolita by Nabokov, even though it’s like a classic and everyone besides me seems to adore it – lol, idk – the narrative was just over the top creepy and perverted to me.

  3. Ha! Yeah, we’ve all been there before. I always laugh when I see John Dies At The End popping up on my feed because my friend from high school (actually one of my very first friends when I moved to Texas in elementary school) plays Dave in the movie adaptation. So imagine watching something so trippy while knowing someone in it.

    1. omg that’s crazy!!! I didn’t even know it was a movie, but I can imagine it would be an insane movie! But watching your friend do all that would be so weird!
